Set in New York during the roaring 20’s, Grand Gin Rummy is a card game app developed and launched for AndroidApple and Facebook mobile platforms by GameDuell in 2015. The art of GGR is heavily influenced by the architecture, fashion, night life and Art Deco movement of that romanticized, stylized and extravagant era.

Flappers, pinstripe suits, furs and monacles, analog machines, polished wood, oiled leather, smoke and gold were all prominent inspiration for my development of the GGR visual style. The Grand Gin Rummy Logo is a reflection of these and other elements, combining a stylized version of this fictional hotel with cards, typography and rank achievement.

 
 

Logo

My logo concept work explored a variety of styles and treatments.

The final Grand Gin Rummy logo has five registered variants, each with respective palettes and design considerations.

 
 
 
 

Colour variations, simplified black and white, horizontal lock-ups and minimalist versions provided alternation and scalable brand solutions for print, digital, and web.

 

STYLE GUIDE

 

Originally devised for investor review, I developed this Style Guide before the game was completed.

Utilized for both internal art reference and marketing efforts, a version was also made for external purposes.

Important features include guidelines for logo usage, iconography, palette, typography rules, textures, buttons and copyright information.

 
 
 

UI & UX  

Grand Gin Rummy was GameDuell's first game built using a new Haxe-based engine, which enabled real-time cross-platform gameplay. The team and I utilized combined expertise from previous projects to build, refine and launch GameDuell's first true game app.

By adapting wireframes, consolidating graphics and user-testing game UI, we were able to systematically construct and tweak it early on. 
 

 
 

As the UI and UX logic evolved, so did the graphics and visual elements associated with them.

 
 

Finally, promotional media supported the game via social media, web, Google Play and the App Store

Launched in July 2014, Paradigm Effects is an independent Canadian 
guitar equipment manufacturer specializing in advanced effects pedals.

 
 

 

Tidal Ebb

 

Designed to realize a sound that is at once fluid and powerful, Tidal Ebb became the stylistic benchmark for all other Paradigm Effects chassis designs.

The script typography was carefully altered to eliminate sharp edges and emphasize organic, round curves.  

 
 

 

Ionic Thrust

 

Half science and half ego, Ionic Thrust punches its way through barriers to excel into headspace. 

The design of this pedal echoes Soviet aerospace concept art from the Cold War.

 
 
 

 

 

Cumulus Drift

 

Designed to envision a comparably serene yet surreal sky, this pedal draws influence from water ripples, acid rain and Jupiter's 'Big Red Spot.'

The hand-rendered script is influenced by bubblegum, hurricane swirls and oil slicks.

 
 

 

Atomic Fuzz

 

This robust, minimalist pedal design captures all of the snarling heat and abrasive resolve of crunchy, 8-bit analog chaos.

The only design in the series to include an icon and uppercase letters, Atomic Fuzz is especially loud.

 
 
 

 

 

Submergent Coast

 

Manifesting aquatic rhythm and audible flow, this pedal design includes a jungle of oceanic monsters amongst an alien seascape.

 
 

 

Mobile App

 
 

Conceived to allow customers to test products in real time through a simulation interface, the Paradigm Effects Mobile App was designed to be simple, informative, interactive and fun to use. 

Expanding on the established branding and product design, the App retains a sharp, simplified aesthetic. 

 
 
 
 
 
 

The nav bar employs five icons, allowing the user the freedom to guide their own experience without dropdown menus or wordy clutter.

Public Relations Campaign

 

The Ontario Energy Board is a crown corporation that monitors all municipal energy providers in the province. Although omnipresent, the company is regulated by the Canadian government, and thus enjoys very little public exposure. 

In an effort to promote a positive public image for the OEB, this minimalist advertorial series features a black extension cord contorted into recognizable items as a metaphor for everyday electricity usage. 

 
 

INTRANET UI DESIGN

 

The OEB also needed a new internal intranet, redesigned from the ground up. A significant project, this effort united all departments, and included input from stakeholders, IT, programmers and administrators.

THOUGH IT'S ART DIRECTION AND GRAPHIC DESIGN ARE NOW NOTICEABLY DATED (SO MUCH WEB 2.0!), IT REMAINS AN EFFECTIVE EXAMPLE OF INFORMATION HIERARCHY AND INTERFACE DESIGN.

 
 
 

Interactive e-Bill

 

Created as a tool to help consumers understand their energy consumption habits, the interactive e-bill compares monthly electricity and natural gas statements with provincial averages, peak usage times and efficiency practices.  

Like the Intranet example above, the icons, UI, UX and palette all reflect the design style of their time, but were designed to be simple, clear and easy to navigate. This tool was launched in late 2009, and is still used by thousands of Ontarians every day.
